Ward Trek Along Makara Beach - Saturday, 28 January 2012

We went on a Ward Hike from Makara which is about 10 miles west of Wellington on the West Coast.  The hike was 4 miles and took us west along the shoreline and then south down to Opau Bay.  From there we went inland and up a valley to the top of the hills that look out over the Tasman Sea.  On top of the hills we saw two old WWII gun emplacements and then walked back down to the starting place.  It took about 4 hours in total and provided a fun day.

The dashed line represents our trek starting just below the "B" in Ohariu Bay and ending there.

Here's our group, missionaries, families and ourselves, about 25 strong ready to make the trek.  You can make out Ann, 5th from the left with the walking stick!

Here's the first leg of the trip out to the point you see here.  We'll also be up on top of the point when we finish up and hike back down.

Here are some pictures of the trek along the coastline.

There were fishermen along the trail for the first mile or so.  It then became too far to hike to fish.

You can see the south island in the distance, about 15 miles off in the distance.

Here we are venturing out into the waves...yes, when the tide is up, it's waves at our feet.
Here are some photos from down on the beach as we walked south.

Now the real trek begins!  It's up the road to the top of the hills to see the old WWII gun implacements with the SHEEP looking on.

We hiked all the way up this little valley to the top of the hill

We all made the trek up and here we are victorius at the top.

The views were quite spectacular.  Off in the distance of the photo above you can see the south island.  And then below you can see the gun implacement.  I would have housed a 5" gun.  There were two of these bunkers next to each other.

Then it's back down a trail to the starting point.  You can see the shoreline we came along prior to climbing the hills.  Going down we actually hike down the ridge just above the shoreline in the middle of the photo.  It's quite the fall down if you make a mistake!

And down we come!
