We drove from Queenstown down through the center of the lower half of the south island to Invercargil and then west and up the boarder of Fiordland to Te Anau. Spent the night there and then went on to Milford Sound on a tour bus. We covered some 350km on this trip. You can see our route in green and purple below on the map.
Highlights of this days unplanned trip included:
- A visit to the Queens Park & Museum in Invercargill to see the Anne Frank exhibit.
- A drive to Bluff, one of the southern most points on the south island
- Visiting the famous international "Street Sign" at "Lands End"
- Stop in Te Anau for the night, entry to "Fiordland" #4 on the 101 Kiwi Weekend list

This is Homer Tunnel the portal to Milford Sound from the east was started in 1935 and not completed until 1954. It runs for nearly 1 mile straight through granite! Numerous avalanches slowed down construction of the tunnel.
